MATCH REPORTS
Saturday January 28th Caersws League ( Home )
Penycae chief Simon Sedgwick was very
impressed with his sides 2-2 draw against visitors
Caersws. " I would have taken a point before kick off
when i saw their team sheet which boasted a full 11
players all blessed with experience of playing at a
higher level." said Sedgwick. " I thought our keeper
Mike Platt was desperately unlucky to have been
penalised with 15 minutes gone for a challenge on Graham
Evans who tucked away the resulting spot kick. We all
know we are not the finished article and even with
several regulars missing we had enough about us not to
keel."
Sean Dodd delivered a fine free kick into the box
and Ian Williams pegged a goal back. Right on the stroke
of half time one of the smallest players Mike Latham
gave Penycae the lead with a fine header with Dodd again
the provider. " I was delighted by the display of new
signing John Paul Wood and he looks as if he will have a
bright future with us. Sadly we were not available to
hang onto our lead and we gift wrapped them an equaliser
when Andy Stockton lost the ball when he slipped giving
Neil Mitchell the chance to race clear to beat our
keeper Platt who had an outstanding game and kept us in
it at the end.

Saturday January 21st Flint Town League ( Away )
Flint Town enjoyed a 3-1 success against
Penycae. The unmarked Ian Williams turned in a Sean Dodd
free kick for the opener as Penycae started the brighter
of the two teams. Indeed Flint were fortunate to survive
when Danny Dobbins escaped serious punishment
after a late challenge. Flint boss Paul Davies conceded
" We were not at the races in the opening half but did
up the tempo in the second half." Penycaes Shaun Dodd
conceded a 55 minute penalty following a foul on
Jonathan Rush and it was despatched by Stuart Carroll.
Flint the took control of proceedings scoring twice in
the final six minutes through Shaun Beck and Jamie
Watkinson.
Man Of The Match: Ian Williams

Saturday January 7th Buckley League ( Away )
Buckley defeated Penycae now managed by former
boss Simon Sedgwick 3-1. " To be honest it was a case of
men against boys" said Sedgwick. " Having said that all
three goals came from set plays. What did provide me
with an element of satisfaction was the impact of Tom
Allen who bagged a late consolation goal for us and it
was the best of the match." The result was similarly
assessed by Buckley chief Gareth Thomas who confirmed "
It was a comfortable victory in the end without having
to stretch ourselves. There was not a lot to choose
between the two sides early on but once we took a 29th
minute lead we never looked in danger." Andy Moran
converted an inch perfect Anthony Williams corner to
open the scoring before Buckley instantly doubled their
advantage Good build up play from Mike Burke and Johnny
Leonard found Moran and his shot found the back of
the net via a deflection off Penycaes Paul Connolly.
Buckley put the game beyond doubt when a Lee Atherton
header was turned in by Matt Hughes.
Man Of The Match: Tom Allen

Monday January 2nd Ruthin League ( Home )
Penycae rallied to take a point from there
encounter with Ruthin Town who took an early lead after
Josh Davies had carved out an opening for new signing
Craig Wilkinson. The hosts dictated the rest of the half
though with Kev Roberts and Jack Challoner both going
agonisingly close to levelling. Penycaes patience was
rewarded however when Ian Williams set up Tom Allen who
deservedly squared the match with 20 minutes remaining.

Saturday December 10th Penryhncoch League ( Away )
Penrhyncoch is a long way to go to return empty handed
but that is exactly what happened to Penycae who lost
1-0 with the only goal being scored by Stuart Frazer.
There were two big plusses from the trip and that was
the impressive debuts for Keeper Tony Gandy and left
back Jack Jones who had both stepped up from the
reserves.

Saturday December 3rd Porthmadog League ( Home )
Penycae had goalkeeper Michael Platt dismissed
after just six minutes for a professional foul as they
went down 2-1 to Porthmadog. Central defender Craig
Hughes took over between the sticks and in all fairness
coped well and kept the score down to 1-0 by the
interval with the solitary strike scored by Ryan
Roberts. In the second half Darren Thomas doubled
Porthmadogs tally but from that point onwards Penycae
just kicked on. Tim Manuel got Penycae back into the
game following some good work from Scott Roberts and at
the death Penycae finished the stronger with Ian Andrews
and Jamie Rogers both spurning good chances.

Saturday November 26th Conwy Utd League ( Away )
Gale force conditions made a mockery of the
Penycae game at Conwy with the contest ending locked at
1-1. " On reflection taking account of the playing
conditions i am happy to come away with a point." said
Penycae boss Simon Sedgwick. " The important thing was
not coming away empty handed. We had a dreadful start"
Conwy took full advantage of Penycaes slow start to take
the lead through Lee Craven, although they then had a
defender sent off for a crude challenge. Penycae worked
there way back into the game and Phil Fitzsimmons
spectacular free kick levelled the contest. Andy
Stockton and Kevin Roberts came close to snatching a
winner for Penycae but both teams were made to settle
for a point apiece.

Saturday November 19th Cefn Druids League (
Home )
Cefn Druids were made to work extremely hard for their
2-0 victory at Penycae and it was anything other but a
stroll in the park. Penycae boss Simon Sedgwick was
first to admit the best team won, " To be fair they were
much sharper and fitter in every department. I am far
from down beat about the result and i hope we just go on
and learn from this encounter. Luck clearly was not on
our side and we were without four regulars and we played
a large part of this game without keeper Mike Platt who
went off injured and we had to put Craig Hughes in goal
but to be honest even at full tilt we would have
struggled to keep up with them." Max Peate broke the
deadlock in the 12th minute after a corner was not
cleared and Keiran Quinn hooked the ball back into play
and Peate out jumped his marker to score. Mark Harris
missed two glorious chances and Robbie James had a goal
disallowed for pushing as Druids bossed the opening
half. The game was a lot more even after the break and
Kevin Roberts went close to equalising but his deflected
free kick was saved by Chris Mullock. Late in the game
Huw Griffiths introduced Andrew Swarbrick for Tony Cann
and he spurned three glorious chances but the points
were sealed two minutes from time when Matt Hurdman
scored a fine solo goal.

Saturday November 12th Llanrhaedr League ( Away )
Penycae picked up a valuable three points on the
road at Llanrhaedr. Their first half performance was as
good as they have produced since manager
Simon Sedgwick took over and it looked at one stage they
were going to score a sackful after Kevin Roberts scored
a stunning 25th minute opener from distance. The
hosts were then gift-wrapped an equaliser though when a
grub kick from keeper Mike Platt hit defender Craig
Hughes and rebounded into the path of Alan Jones who was
left with the simplest of chances to score. Back came Penycae on the half mark and after good work by Andy
Stockton and Kevin Roberts, Tom Allen made no mistake.
The visitors were unable to keep the tempo going after
the break and it was no surprise when Jamie Evans
equalised. It got worse when substitute Mike Latham was
dismissed following a two footed tackle. Penycae were
hanging on for grim death at the end but with the last
throw of the dice, Llanrhaedr failed to deal with a Tom
Allen corner and striker Ian Andrews volleyed home.

Saturday November 5th Penryhncoch League
Cup ( Away )
There was just the one league cup game with
Penrhyncoch just shading their clash with Penycae 2-1.
Penycae boss Simon Sedgwick was left to rue missed
chances, claiming "There is no doubt about the fact the
better side were knocked out of the competition. I felt
somehow it wasn't going to be our day when Mike Latham
squandered a great chance to put us ahead when he fired
a spot-kick wide with the score at 0-0." Gari Lewis put
the home side ahead before Jack Challinor levelled. Tom
Allen and Andy Stockton went close for Penycae but it
was Stuart Fraser who bagged a last gasp winner to book
Penrhyncoch a passage into the semi-final.

Saturday October 29th Rhos Aelwyd League
( Home )
Its going to be a two horse race for the
wining of the manager of the month award for October
because as well as Gareth Thomas of Buckley steering his
side to four straight victories, Simon Sedgwick has
marshalled Penycae to an 100 per cent record.
Sedgwick remained philosophical about his sides 2-1
derby day success against Rhos. " To be honest we were
pretty average for the first hour and never really
imposed ourselves and deservedly fell behind to a 25th
minute strike from Danny Evans" said Sedgwick. " Our
keeper Mike Platt Platt really kept us in the game and
two saves in particular from Aaron Edwards were of real
quality. The turning point of the game was the
dismissal of Aelwyds Kevin Fitzsimmons and we were able
to make most of that extra man. We when started to take
control, Tom Allen was denied by the crossbar and soon
after Ian Andrews fired against the upright. I
thought for a moment that it wasn't going to be our day,
but with 10 minutes left the games best player Tom Allen
found Ian Andrews who beat Anthony Crossthwaite from
close range. With seven minutes remaining Andy
Stockton was able to fire the wining goal once more with
an assist from Tom Allen to secure all three points."

Saturday October 22nd Llangefni Town
League ( Away )
Surely Penycae boss Simon Sedgwick is just one
win away from being named manager of the month after his
side recorded their third successive win as they
overcame Llangefni 1-0. Andy Stockton wreaked havoc all
afternoon and on another day could have had a hat-trick.
The only goal of the game came on the half hour mark
when Ben Jones was on hand to tap the ball home after
the keeper failed to cleanly take an Ian Andrews effort.

Saturday October 15th Llangefni Town League
Cup (
Home )
Penycae look to have turned the corner under the
stewardship of Simon Sedqwick after they defeated
visiting Llangefni 3-2. The away side did take a 15th
minute lead against the run of play through Scott
Quigley, but it didn't take the home side too long to
get back on level terms as Tim Manuel was brought down
in the penalty area and Ian Andrews dispatched the
subsequent spot kick. From that point on onwards Penycae
never looked back and a fine solo goal from Kevin
Roberts put them in front. There was also a real touch
of class about Penycaes third goal, Tom allen cutting in
from the left flank and unleashing an unstoppable shot
from distance. Penycae were left to live on there nerves
at the end when they gifted their opponents a second
goal converted by Leon Irwin but they held on for a
deserved victory, booking an away clash at Penrhyncoch
in the next round.

Saturday October 8th Llandudno League (
Home )
Grabbing all the headlines for all the right reasons
were Penycae who defied all of the odds to defeat
Llandudno 1-0. An ecstatic manager Simon Sedgwick
enthused " It is a great feeling to get off the mark and
when you think i went into the game without eight
regulars it really emphasises best of all what a
terrific result it was. The hard work in training is
starting to pay rich dividends and everyone is starting
to play for one another. We went into the clash as
complete underdogs and most people didn't give us a
chance so it was also great to prove the doubters wrong.
I would have been happy with a point never mind three."
The only goal of the game came around the hour mark
as Tom Allen won the ball in midfield fed Mike Latham
and he created a great chance for Ian Andrews to rifle
the ball home from inside the box. " We have a double
header against Llangefni around the corner so we have
set our standards now and we will be looking for a
repeat performance " added Sedgwick.

Saturday October 1st FC Cefn Welsh Cup (
Home )
The prestigious competition is always
full of surprises and FC Cefn defied the odds to clinch
a deserved 2-1 success at Penycae. Cefn took a second
minute lead through Josh Foulkes. The visitors matched
their Cymru Alliance opponents in every department and
doubled there tally on the half hour mark through Nicky
Williams. Penycae reduced the deficit through Ian
Andrews in the second half but they were short on ideas
and could not match the desire and passion of the hungry
visitors.

Saturday September 24th Guilsfield League (
Home )
Penycae stay rooted to the foot of the table and
manager Simon Sedgwick was extremely scathing about his
sides contribution in a 3-1 defeat. " We were absolutely
woeful and clueless at times and we spent more time
arguing amongst ourselves rather than focusing on the
game" he said. " To illustrate my point, we had six
players booked for dissent and Phil Fitzpatrick sent off
for arguing with the referee. The visitors took a
deserved lead through Will Thomas but when Mike Latham
slotted home a half chance I was optimistic that it
might have been the turning point to the match. How
wrong could I of been, from then on we went backwards
and second half strikes from Thomas And Ian Probert
killed the game stone dead."

Saturday September 17th Caersws League (
Away )
There are some real positive signs that Penycae have
turned the corner and manager Simon Sedgwick was in a
positive mood despite losing 3-2 at Caersws. " I was
proud of the team and we were extremely unlucky not to
have come away with at least a point he said. The hosts
took an early lead through Richard Evans but Penycae
levelled through Ben Jones. Penycae then shoot
themselves in the foot as some sloppy defending let in
Mark Griffiths to restore his sides lead. The visitors
then deservedly got back on level terms through Mike
Latham but disaster struck as Griffiths fired the winner

Saturday September 10th Flint Town
United League ( Home )
Penycae are starting to regroup and there were massive
signs of improvement in their clash with Flint with
Simon Sedgwick using his capability to quickly bring in
new faces.
They took a fourth minute lead through Ben Jones and
kept that lead until Simon Thelwell was able to convert
a 61st minute penalty after Tinashe Muthana had clipped
Johnny Hill. The visitors got there noses in front soon
after when Matty Harvey skilfully set up Phil Lloyd but
rather than collapse, Penycae pulled level through Marc
Gunther. Flint did improve as the game progressed and
they restored the lead through Jordon Brierley and
killed the game off with a special first for the club
from 16 year old Jamie Hayes. Flint boss Paul Davies
wasn't happy and said " Clearly we failed to give
respect to our hosts and it seemed as if many of the
players thought all they had to do was to turn up"

Saturday August 13th Penrhyncoch League ( Home )
1st Half: Started brightly playing some
controlled football with David Powell having a great
chance to open his account but unfortunately lacked a
little composure in front of goal and the chance went
astray. Then in the 20th minute the visitors took the
lead with a disputed header when the scorer appeared to
push a defender to get to the ball. Penycae pressed to
get an equaliser but some naive defending allowed the
visitors 2 more goals to give them a 3-0 lead at the
interval.
2nd Half: The home side tried hard to
get back into the match but could not break down the
visitors defence. Penrhyncoch then added a fourth from
the penalty spot after a hand ball was given against Ian
Andrews. The visitors continually caught Penycae
on the break and it was no surprise when they added two
more goals to make the final score 6-0 and take all
three well deserved points.
